As soon as the news broke that Jonathan Jackson was leaving General Hospital again, it was only a matter of time before Lucky Spencer headed out of Port Charles. He had previously stopped by the hospital to say goodbye to Liz and Isaiah as well as visited Lulu’s new house to let his sister know he was leaving town, but in the June 11 episode, Lucky said two more emotional farewells before flying off to Europe with his son, Aiden.
A Mother’s Love
Sitting down with Laura in her office, Lucky admitted to his mother that he was already packed and ready to go. “I’m so sorry, Mom,” he said, struggling to find the right words. “I know you wanted me to stay. And I wanted to make it work… for so many reasons, but… it’s just… this isn’t where I belong. At least, not right now.” After Laura confirmed with her son that he was leaving because it’s what he genuinely believed was best for him, she assured him, “There’s nothing to apologize for.”

Lucky explained that when he came back to Port Charles last fall, he was overwhelmed with guilt because he felt like he’d been gone when his family needed him, and now he worried he was abandoning them again. Laura reassured her son that she wouldn’t want him to stay if he wasn’t going to be happy in Port Charles. She added that this time it didn’t feel like he was running away, but making the move that was best for him. When she asked what had motivated his decision to leave, Lucky admitted that Liz had “wisely” turned down his marriage proposal. Offering her sympathies, Laura understood that he and Liz wanted different things out of life. “Exactly,” Lucky nodded. “We love each other enough to want what’s best for each other, and Elizabeth and I have taken very different paths over the years. We need different things, and it’s better that we acknowledge that now — ‘cuz if we don’t, we’ll just end up hurting each other all over again.”
Laura pointed out that in real life, “Love stories don’t really have fairy-tale endings.” “Yeah,” sighed Lucky, who added, “I’d like to think that once in a while, they do.” He said he knew that Laura and his dad, Luke, hadn’t been big on fairy tales. “We liked adventures,” Laura concurred. Lucky said he had inherited his adventurous side from his folks. Laura remarked that that was why she’d never questioned Lucky’s need “to be out there in the world, to be seeing it and saving it and, you know, changing it.” “Don’t make me sound too good,” Lucky teased. “People are going to expect better of me.” Warmly, Laura told him, “It’ll be our little secret then.”
Growing more serious, Laura said, “I am very grateful that you came home and that you reconnected with the people you love and who love you, and will always love you, no matter where you go.” Her eyes glistened with tears.

With Aiden joining him for the start of this new journey, Lucky promised to take good care of his son. “Wherever you end up, when Aiden comes back here,” Laura asked, her voice thick with emotion, “would you try just a little bit harder to keep in touch with me? And just let me know how and where you are? Just every once in a while?” The tears finally broke through as she hugged her boy goodbye. “I want you to know you have my blessing to go,” she said gently. Fighting tears of his own, Lucky responded, “That… means the world to me, Mom. And thank you for welcoming me home and… also for letting me go.” Laura promised she’d always be there if he needed her (“I’m always gonna be your mom”) and they embraced one last time before he departed.
Later, alone in her office, Laura pulled a photo of an 11-year-old Lucky out of her wallet. “My baby,” she said fondly, lifting the picture to her lips and giving it a tender kiss, then hugging it to her chest.

End of the Road
At the hospital, Isaiah mentioned to Liz that Lucky had gifted him a cabin that belonged to Luke that he’d planned to fix up. Noting that she didn’t seem as okay with Lucky’s exit as she claimed to be, the doctor asked why she turned down his proposal. “It was tempting,” she admitted. “And it would have been great… for all of 10 minutes. And then it wouldn’t have worked. Both of our hearts would have been broken. Again.” Isaiah reminded Liz that while Aiden would be coming home soon, Lucky wouldn’t be, and wondered if she’d really said everything she needed to.
At the airport, Aiden was excited to be heading to Paris, but Lucky reminded him that it was just a pit stop on their way to Amsterdam… though he did promise they would circle back to France later. Just then, Lucky received a text from Liz: “Wait for me.”

In the waiting area, after Aiden had boarded the plane, Lucky begged the gate agent to give him just a little more time to wait for his son’s mother. An out-of-breath Liz finally arrived. Noting that she didn’t have any luggage, Lucky admitted he had hoped she’d changed her mind about coming with them. “I thought about it,” Liz told him. “I really did think about it. But I cannot let you leave without you knowing that… I do love you. That hasn’t changed. And I will never stop loving you.” Lucky replied: “I know. I love you, too. More than ever.”
Liz smiled and urged Lucky to be happy before making him promise that he would take care of himself and make sure Aiden got home safely. The gate agent again reminded Lucky that it was past time to board, so Lucky gave Liz a long farewell kiss. “I’ll still think of you whenever I see something beautiful,” he told her. “Goodbye, Elizabeth.” With tears in her eyes, Liz watched as Lucky scanned his ticket. She waved at him as he paused in the doorway for one last look back. After the door shut behind him, Liz let out a deep breath and said, “Bye, Lucky.”
