From Rachel not wanting to say goodbye to Grandpa John to Paul beautifully remembering the life of the father he only found out about as an adult. The Tuesday, June 10 episode of Days of Our Lives featured Salem saying goodbye to the superhero they all knew as John Black. It was emotional, heartbreaking, touching, and even funny. It perfectly paid homage to the man we’ve seen go through every single trial and tribulation known to man for the last forty years. Plus, Bo found out about John’s fate.
Goodbye, John Black
In Part 1 of this heartwrenching goodbye, Salem gathered to say goodbye to John. In Part Two, the funeral began, without Rachel (a wonderful Alice Halsey). Marlena (Deidre Hall) giving her John’s Mickey Mantle baseball card was everything. Ari (Marissa Reyes) and Tate (Leo Howard) ended up taking her home. Being at the funeral was too much for her.
The eulogies told the life of an amazing man, and they all hit hard emotionally. Shane (Charles Shaughnessy), Steve (Stephen Nichols), and Abe (James Reynolds) talked about their friend and how they represented three of the biggest phases of John’s professional life. Abe represented John’s cop era, Shane was his ISA era, and Steve was his private detective era.
When Abe said that even though he hadn’t been in law enforcement for a long time, John still called him “partner” — that hit us hard. Brady (Eric Martsolf) sang “Amazing Grace” while Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) and Roman (Josh Taylor) remembered John as their brother. He may not have been their brother by blood, but they said he was their brother in their heart. They talked about how he was afraid to lose his connection with Caroline (the late Peggy McCay) and Shawn (the late Frank Parker) after he learned he wasn’t Roman Brady. But their relationship remained strong.
His family and friends reflected on his superhero status and the fact that he was a bright light in their world. Paul’s eulogy was especially touching. He did his best John Black impression. Plus, he talked about how his father rolled with the punches despite everything that he faced. While Paul (Christopher Sean) hadn’t known John was his father for that long, they forged a strong connection. Baseball was one way they did that. A former baseball player himself, Paul said that he wouldn’t have been surprised if John had been one in a past life (Drake Hogestyn was drafted by the New York Yankees in real life). He also said that John made him feel loved and accepted. And whenever he sees “a rainbow up high or a baseball in the sky,” he will think of his dad. Beautiful.
Hope Tells Bo About John
The only time the show broke away from John’s funeral was to show Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso). Bo planned this romantic picnic with his wife, but he could tell something was wrong. And then she told him that John was gone. Instantly, Bo became upset, and he couldn’t imagine what Marlena was going through. As expected, he wanted to get to the funeral, but the doctor said it was too soon. He was still recovering. But we all know what will happen. Even if he doesn’t get the go-ahead from the doctor to go to the funeral, he’ll find a way — whatever it takes — to get there.
