Amidst the ever-present drama on Coronation Street, there’s a particularly sweet moment next week, shown in this spoiler video, when Carla Connor (Alison King) seeks Betsy Swain’s (Sydney Martin) blessing before her (latest) proposal attempt to her mum, DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).
Proposals have become quite a factor in ‘Swarla’ land recently. Botched proposals, anyway.
First off, in the aftermath of Craig Tinker’s (Colson Smith) murder, Lisa proposed to Carla.
Though touched, Carla kindly rejected her girlfriend as she knew, deep down that the proposal was coming from a place of grief, while she wanted the it to come from a place of love.
That wasn’t the end of proposal-gate, though, when Carla’s own attempt went awry.
Pinching an idea straight from a number of rom-com’s, Carla roped in Rover’s barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) to drop an engagement ring in a glass of champagne.
She had to hit the break, however, when Lisa admitted that ex-wife Becky had proposed identically.
Undeterred, Carla ploughs ahead with her plan for another proposal, but prior to her next attempt, she decides to seek the blessing of Lisa’s beloved daughter, and anxiously approaches Betsy.
Betsy is in her element when she sees how uncharacteristically nervous Carla is and mocks her playfully, until Carla blurts out her plan to ask for Lisa’s hand in marriage.
Betsy’s always gonna Betsy, and she continues to tease Carla for a little while long. Just what would Carla do if Betsy refused her blessing?
Luckily for her, when Betsy’s had enough of making her sweat, she gives Carla her full support, remarking that she’s never seen her Mum so happy.
Relieved, Carla wraps her future daughter-in-law in a massive hug and returns to planning the latest proposal.
While we know there’s more twists and turns in store, can we hope for a happy ending for the beloved ‘Swarla’?
