Tuesday’s episode begins with Vernon arriving home with hushpuppies and chocolate cake for Anita and Tracy, but the ladies aren’t exactly in a celebratory mood.
“I can’t change the past,” Anita says, still defending herself. “All I can do is own my ambition and what I was willing to sacrifice to reach our goals.” Tracy implies that Anita hasn’t actually had to sacrifice anything, but she assures her former bandmate: “You have no idea about the obstacles I’ve had to overcome.”
Tracy says she knew Anita would come up with “pretty stories” to shield herself from the “awful truth,” at which point Anita decides to put an end to this whole charade. She thanks Tracy for coming, offers to pay for her return home and apologizes for even bringing up the idea of a potential reunion.
But Tracy says Anita is jumping to conclusions, and that she isn’t entirely opposed to reuniting. That said, Tracy also wants them to stop “tip-toeing around what’s really between” them. “You said you wanted to talk,” she tells Anita. “Let’s do it, unless you’re happy being haunted.”
Anita apologizes again for not considering how her going solo would affect the other girls, and Tracy says the reunion is a go — that is, if they can convince Sharon to get on board. Anita says Sharon already hung up on her once, but Tracy has a Plan B: “Sharon may refuse your calls, but not mine. I’m the peacemaker, right?”
After sending Tracy to the airport, Anita admits to Vernon that there was some truth in what she said. “I was not all sweetness and light,” Anita explains of her younger days. “I was ruthless, selfish, someone I tried very hard to erase.”
Kat and Tomás Get a Fresh Start
Kat and Chelsea are talking shop at Uptown, but their business meeting turns into a comfort sesh when Chelsea mentions striking out with Allison and her husband. She thought there was something real between them, but it turns out she was “just the spice, not the main ingredient.”
Kat also complains about her hot mess of a love life — specifically how Tomás refuses to condemn Eva due to a lack of concrete evidence. The worst part, Chelsea admits, is that “Tomás is right. … Like it or not, Eva’s here to stay.”
Kat doesn’t even have time to properly tear into Chelsea for taking Eva’s side, because who look who showed up to their table — it’s Tomás! And he’s not there to apologize.
Tomás implies that he’s gotten to know Kat pretty well, hence him weighing in on her relationship with Eva, whereas Kat hasn’t tried to get to know him at all. Shocker: Kat doesn’t appreciate the implication that she might be too self-involved.
So he gives Kat a crash course on all things Tomás: he reads fantasy novels, he’s been mentoring a young boy through a big brother program for five years, and he’s an avid salsa dancer. “I feel like I should have know that,” Kat says of that last one, to which he replies, “Yeah, you should have.”
But just because Tomás is opening up, that doesn’t mean Kat is ready to hear him out on the Eva situation. “I’m entitled to mistrust Eva,” Kat explains. “She’s earned it. And I should be able to react honestly to her untrustworthiness without being treated like a bad person.”
Things eventually level out between them, with Kat promising to get to know Tomás better, a conclusion they commemorate with a kiss.
Hayley Is Pregnant… and Chelsea Isn’t Pleased
Bill and Hayley grab dinner at the country club ahead of (yet another) gala, at which point Hayley confesses that she’s tired of attending endless events and letting Bill’s firm rule their lives.
She already feels like she’s getting less as his second wife, between the smaller wedding and the shortened honeymoon, and the community is letting her know that she doesn’t measure up.
Bill suggests Hayley have a drink to take some of the edge off, but she turns it down because — drumroll please — she’s pregnant!
Startled at first, Bill eventually settles into excitement. “You’ve made me the happiest man in the world,” he tells Hayley… just in time for Chelsea to show up and overhear the couple’s joyous news.
“A baby is good news,” Hayley says, but Chelsea disagrees. “For you, maybe,” she replies. “You thought that people were shunning you before? Just you wait. You and that kid are going to be ostracized for life.”
Surprised and hurt, Hayley decides to make one thing clear: If Chelsea thought that Bill and her relationship was a passing fancy, she’s got another thing coming. They’re in it for life, and she’ll just have to learn to accept that.
Martin Avoids Telling Smitty the Truth
Over at Orphey Gene’s, Smitty finally gets a moment alone with Martin, using the opportunity to ask about his involvement with Bill.
“I wish I made you as happy as you make me,” Smitty says with tears in his eyes. “Whatever this is, we can get through it together.”
Smitty explains how Bill summoned him for a meeting. “It sounded like he knew something dangerous,” he tells Martin. “Does he know something about you that I don’t?”
Martin brushes off Smitty’s concerns, explaining that Bill is merely a slippery snake playing mind games and making power moves. Smitty admits that he was jealous of the idea that someone knows Martin better than he does — even if that person is Bill.
Love (and Homework) Is in the Air
Back at home, Tyrell is helping Jessica with physics — but that isn’t the real subject on her mind. She’s more interested in the chemistry between them.
And there’s definitely chemistry. Jessica and Tyrell are making out within minutes, following some very nerdy scientific flirting.
