Early Life and Path to Acting
Jeff Hordley was born on March 7, 1970, in Crumpsall, England, and grew up in Oldham, Greater Manchester. He attended North Chadderton Comprehensive before pursuing his passion for acting at the Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Theatre Arts in 1997.
Like many aspiring actors, Jeff started out with smaller roles, including guest appearances on Coronation Street. But in 2000, he landed the role that would change his career forever: Cain Dingle in ITV’s Emmerdale.
Rise to Fame as Cain Dingle
Cain quickly became one of Emmerdale’s most complex characters — a blend of villain, anti-hero, and fiercely loyal family man. Jeff’s portrayal has earned him multiple British Soap Award nominations, including Best Actor and Villain of the Year.

He underwent surgery to remove the diseased section of his bowel, which allowed his gut to heal and gave him a better quality of life. Even so, Jeff has been hospitalised several times due to the condition.
Despite these struggles, he has never let Crohn’s disease define him. Instead, he has become a powerful advocate for awareness, showing fans that even with long-term illness, it’s possible to thrive in a demanding career.
Life Off-Screen
Away from the soap, Jeff shares his life with fellow Emmerdale star Zoë Henry, who plays Rhona Goskirk. The couple married in 2003 and have two children together. Fans often admire how grounded and private the pair are, balancing family life with their busy acting schedules.
