Days of Our Lives actor Matthew Ashford has talked about the possibility of his character Jack Deveraux returning to the soap, and creating some craziness in the process. The long-running character has been on the show since 1987, and though he recently departed Salem for Boston, his character could return.
Days of Our Lives is one of the longest-running TV shows and soap operas in the world, and has thrived on its mix of strong characters, complex storylines, and interpersonal relationships. Jack Deveraux was often found front and center of these storylines, and this could be the case again.
Per Soap Opera Digest, Ashford has revealed that, despite the character’s departure, it might not be too long before Jack is back in Salem. He expressed hope that the former villain turned antihero, and one-time Mayor of Salem and newspaper owner can return to his roots.
Ashford states that he wants to see Jack back at The Spectator newspaper, and that there are many avenues for storylines that the character could become a core part of, especially with having plenty of roots in town, and allowing for other characters to make room for Jack. Check out Ashford’s comments below:
“It really is my hope to come back. I’d be happy to reignite some of the old days craziness at The Spectator. I think there are a lot of new young actors who haven’t found themselves yet and the show hasn’t exactly figured out what they’re going to do with them, and it would be a great opportunity for Jack [to get involved].
Vern got do a lot of crazy things, and I could do the same things, and Jennifer doesn’t necessarily have to be there, since we have another newspaper elsewhere. We’ve got enough roots in town to do different stuff. And there’s a lot of stuff Jack could do.”

Jack Deveraux Back In Journalism Feels The Right Fit For The
As one of the most complex characters in Days of Our Lives, Jack Deveraux is the perfect subject for strong plot threads. Ashford is right that taking Jack back to his roots and having him involved with the paper again is a recipe for craziness and chaos, and this is never a bad thing on Days of Our Lives.
Jack might have departed the show, but this is nothing new in the world of soap operas, and characters will often be brought back after leaving. In Deveraux’s case, there is plenty that could be explored if he does return to Salem, and having him back at The Spectator is a great way of generating friction.
There are so many ways in which Jack could be integrated back into the show, and this is something that could be discussed in the Days of Our Lives podcast, as well as across the fanbase. Bringing Jack back to The Spectator is definitely something that is going to add plenty of drama and chaos.
Our Take On Jack’s Possible Return To The Spectator
The Show Better With Jack In It
The varying storylines and plot points play a part in making Days of Our Lives the well-rounded show it is, and Jack Deveraux is key to this. Ashford has received a Daytime Emmy nomination and five Soap Opera Digest Awards for his performance, and having him back will enrich the show.
There are many soap opera tropes that continue to be popular and successful, and the show needs to incorporate as many of these as possible. Deveraux is one of the most interesting and layered characters in Days of Our Lives, and it shouldn’t be too long until he is back in Salem.
